19-hour warning issued for East Lancs as temperatures set to plunge to minus 13

Another weather warning has been issued for East Lancashire and temperatures are set to plunge to minus 13 in parts.

A yellow warning for ice is in force from 5pm today (January 7) until 12pm tomorrow. It covers all parts of East Lancashire

The icy stretches are set to impact transport and people have warned to expect icy patches and untreated roads. There is also a risk of slips and falls on icy surfaces.

Despite the cold, there will be plenty of sunshine, although it will feel cold due to the brisk wind.

The coldest temperatures are forecast on Wednesday.

In Blackburn, temperatures are set to reach lows of minus six. In Rossendale, temperatures are forecast to plummet to minus five.

The Ribble Valley’s temperatures are forecast to hit minus nine. The coldest forecast temperatures are set to hit parts of Pendle, where temperatures could plunge to minus 13, according to the Met Office.

In Rossendale, temperatures could plunge to minus 10. In Burnley, temperatures could hit minus eight.

Met Office chief forecaster, Jason Kelly, said: “With cold weather persisting across the UK this week we have a number of severe weather warnings for wintry hazards. Snow showers will continue to fall over Scotland, Northern Ireland and into Northern Wales and northern England too.

“Where surface water and snow freeze overnight there is a risk of ice as temperatures widely dip below freezing. There will however be good spells of sunshine for those away from northern coasts, though it’ll still feel cold in the northerly breeze.”

An amber cold-health alert is in effect from until January 12, at midday. Forecast weather is expected to have significant impacts across health and social care services.

The snow caused school closures and chaos on the roads this week. At the time of writing, no more snow has been forecast for the rest of the week in East Lancashire.
