2024 in pictures (part two): More stories covered around Mid Cheshire this year

AS 2024 draws to a close, it is time to remember some of the stories we covered this year.

Today, we continue with our look back on the year with more of the great images which featured in the Knutsford Guardian.

This article looks at the second half of the year from July to December. Take a look back at the first of the year here.

July

The country was gripped with election fever in early July, including in Mid Cheshire, where Labour’s Andrew Cooper became the re-formed constituency’s first MP for more than 100 years.

Votes were tallied at the constituency count at Winsford Lifestyle Centre, and Andrew’s victory was confirmed at around 4.15am on Friday, July 5.

August

Armed robbers attempted to steal from an antique shop at Blakemere Village (Image: Supplied)

In August a brave shopkeeper fought off armed robbers who were attempting to steal from his store in Blakemere Village.

With the help of maintenance staff and customers, QC Antiques owner Andy Icely was able to ensure the pair of masked men, who had been wielding metal pipes, left empty-handed.

September

At the end of September, police launched a murder investigation after 37-year-old David Eaton was found stabbed to death in Brook Lane, Rudheath.

A cordon was set up at an address in the street, before officers arrested 35-year-old Matthew Higgins on suspicion of murder.

At a court appearance on December 20, Higgins, of Brook Lane, denied murdering Mr Eaton and a trial date was set for March 2025.

October

Personal trainer Simon Daniels (Image: Newsquest) The communities of Northwich and Winsford were rocked in October by the sad news the body of Simon Daniels had been found following a paddleboarding incident.

Simon, aged 29, had been paddleboarding at Dovestone Reservoir in the Peak District, east of Oldham, on Sunday, October 20, before getting into difficulty.

The personal trainer’s body was later found on October 23.

Since his death, Simon’s family and friends have been raising money towards memorials and local charities, with plans to set up a foundation in his name to help prevent future tragedies in inland open water.

November

Tata Chemicals Europe’s Lostock plant is set to cease operations (Image: Google) More news affecting the community came in November when TATA Chemicals Europe announced it will be closing its ‘loss-making’ plant at Lostock by the end of January 2025.

This decision will impact around 70 members of staff, with many being redeployed to other areas of the company.

The Tata plant’s closure came as neighbouring firm Imerys has confirmed it could also be closing its plant at the industrial site.

December

Katie Price and Kerry Katona drew record-breaking sales for Northwich’s 2024 Christmas panto (Image: Anton Benson Productions) Pantomime season truly hit in December when Katie Price and Kerry Katona appeared on stage in Northwich performing in Cinderella.

The pair were rehearsing hard ahead of the shows, which drew in record-breaking sales.
