Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak reckons that his presence in the team led to both goals as Manchester United were beaten 2-0 at Old Trafford.

The Reds were battered in the first half by the Magpies with Isak opening the scoring in the fourth minute via a close-range header. Newcastle added a second with less than 20 minutes on the clock when another cross from the left-hand side was met by Joelinton, who beat Lisandro Martinez in the air to make it 2-0.

United managed to steady the ship but never looked likely to get back into the game despite Casemiro and Harry Maguire going close. Isak was comfortably Newcastle’s best player against the Reds and he spoke to Sky Sports at full-time about how he managed to impose himself on the home side’s defence.

“It’s about just trying to be in a good position,” Isak explained.

“It’s difficult with Maguire marking you in the box but I got a goal early and after that I was a bit more marked for the rest of the game, which probably opened up the second goal for Joelinton.

“We spoke about it to enter the box with more men.” Discussing the victory overall, the Swedish striker added: “I think focusing on us, our intensity was really good.

“We started the game really well and pressed high, regains and counter attacks. That was the challenge, to have the same intensity here as we do at home and I think especially first half was really good and it paid off with two goals.” The result leaves United languishing 14th in the Premier League at the season’s midway stage.
