Liverpool boss Arne Slot was keen to brush aside suggestions that the Reds need to dip into the transfer market this month with Jamie Carragher urging sporting director Richard Hughes to buy a defender in the next couple of weeks.
“Liverpool should’ve won tonight, and they continue to create big chances even in the games they don’t win,” Carragher wrote on X/Twitter after his former club drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest. “But the defensive solidity they had at the start of the season has gone. Always look likely to concede. Buy a defender!!!!”
Slot was not necessarily in agreement, however. Instead, he chose to focus on the number of options he has to come off the bench with Diogo Jota heading home from a Kostas Tsimikas corner immediately after the pair were introduced in the second half.

“I think you saw today again that I can still strengthen the team or impact the game with the substitutes I have on the bench,” Slot said during his post-match press conference at the City Ground. “Not for the first time this season, these players have helped us, that I could bring in.”
Liverpool has been linked with various players this month but Khvicha Kvaratskhelia looks set to join PSG, and Stefanos Tzimas would be one for the summer even if that proves to be a live one. At the halfway stage of the window, things have not really heated up that much across the board but there could yet be some movement with Marcus Rashford, for instance, likely to be on his way.
Liverpool.com says: Signing a defender would be no bad thing but it isn’t as simple as it sounds. Left-back is the most pressing position that Liverpool needs to upgrade but that can’t really happen while Tsimikas and Andy Robertson are both there. Having three left-backs on the books at the same time just doesn’t seem likely.
