Art exhibition showcasing West Cumbrian industry set to open

An art exhibition showcasing West Cumbria’s industrial history is set to open.

The Beacon Museum’s ‘Inspired by Industry’ will run from January 18 to March 30.

The exhibition will feature a variety of works, including 11 previously unseen pieces by Percy Kelly, one of Cumbria’s most distinguished artists.

The art will be selected from the museum’s own ‘Copeland Collection’, community art collection, and artworks on loan.

The pieces will depict West Cumbria’s transformation from its early days of coal and iron ore mining to its role in the production of steel, textiles, chemicals, and nuclear energy.

Each artwork aims to capture the essence of the region.

Councillor Anne Quilter, Cumberland Council’s executive member for vibrant and healthy places, said: “This exhibition is a testament to the spirit and creativity of West Cumbria.

“The Beacon team, along with their co-curators, have worked tirelessly to bring this vision to life.

“The result is a stunning showcase of West Cumbria’s industrial heritage that brings stories to life, featuring fantastic artwork and, for the first time, a rare glimpse at some of Percy Kelly’s unseen pieces.”

Informal talks by the co-curators will take place throughout the exhibition, providing insights into the artists on display and a deeper understanding of the themes explored in the collection.

Chris Wadsworth will also deliver an exclusive talk, ‘Percy Kelly – Whitehaven in the swinging sixties’ on Saturday, February 1.

This ticketed event will be an exploration of Kelly’s work and its connection to the cultural shifts of the 1960s.
