East Lancashire has been warned to brace for more snow and ice as a further weather warning has been issued.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice. The warning comes into force at 5pm today (January 6) and is set to remain in place until 10am on Tuesday.
The warning covers most parts of East Lancashire, including Blackburn with Darwen, Rossendale, Hyndburn, parts of Burnley, parts of the Ribble Valley and parts of Pendle.
Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services. There are set to be some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths. There will also be some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
Met Office chief meteorologist, Frank Saunders, said: “Hail, sleet or snow showers are expected to affect parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland, spreading to Wales and parts of northwest England this evening, before moving into part of southwest England, the midlands and southern England during the early hours of Tuesday. Rain or hail is more likely towards some western coasts.
“Icy stretches which develop overnight as a result of these showers, or the recent wet conditions, could bring some disruption to travel. In addition to the ice, we could see snow accumulations of a few cm above 200 metres, with a chance of greater than 5 cm above 200 metres in Wales.
“The heaviest snow showers may also produce temporary accumulations of 0-2 cm at low levels. It is not possible to say exactly where this snow might fall, so it’s important that people are prepared.”
The weather has already being causing chaos today, with road and school closures in place.
In Blackburn, and other parts of the county, more snow is set to fall from around 10pm.
A mixture of sleet and snow is forecast on Tuesday.
Temperatures are set to remain low, dipping to -1°C today and to -3°C on Tuesday.
