Bury roads were closed after heavy rainfall – with 1 closure still in place

Borough roads were closed on New Year’s Eve as heavy rainfall battered Greater Manchester – and one closure remains in place.

Torrential rainfall led to Greater Manchester Police declaring a “major incident” on New Year’s Day, with areas of Bolton, Bowdon, Didsbury, Harpurhey, Stalybridge, Stockport and Wigan being hit hard.

In Bury, Manchester Road and Bury New Road were sealed off on New Year’s Eve due to the weather.

Today, Thursday, there is still one road closure in place in Pilsworth Road at the junction of Moss Hall Road due to surface water flooding.

Nuttall Park in Ramsbottom has also been left flooded.

A council spokesperson said: “Bury Council staff were out throughout New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day attending to surface water flooding at various locations throughout the borough, and have visited all locations where reports were received.

“They will continue to attend throughout the week as some issues will need further remedial works to fully resolve.

“River levels were also checked at regular intervals where alerts were received, working closely with the Environment Agency and partners.”

Across Greater Manchester, mayor Andy Burnham said around 1,000 people were evacuated from their homes and has called for “accountability” after admitting “we were all taken by surprise by some degree”.

The Met Office has now issued a warning for heavy snow over the weekend from 12pm on Saturday until 9am on Monday, January 6.
