Cash boost to continue bingo sessions aimed at tackling loneliness

A £2,990 grant will help fund bingo sessions aimed at tackling social isolation and loneliness.

The money from the Marsden Building Society Charitable Foundation was awarded to Colne Citadel.

The charity hopes that the bingo sessions will help ‘improve the lives of local people aged 50 and over’ by providing a ‘fun, social activity’ for them.

The funding will allow the charity to continue its bingo sessions throughout the winter months.

The sessions benefit around 32 people every week, and people attending enjoy three rounds of bingo, hot meals, hot and cold drinks, and desserts.

Rob Pheasey, chief executive at Marsden Building Society, said: “It’s a pleasure to support Colne Citadel in providing a valuable and popular activity for over 50s living in our area.

“By providing a welcoming and inclusive space, these bingo sessions offer attendees the opportunity to connect with others, engage in enjoyable activities, and experience a sense of belonging.

“This initiative aligns with Marsden’s aim to give back to the communities we serve and make a positive impact on the lives of our neighbours.”

Jolene Cooper, assistant centre manager at Colne Citadel, said: “We’re a charity community centre and this generous donation will help support our aim to reduce social isolation and improve well-being.”

Since launching its charitable foundation in 2023, Marsden Building Society has awarded 22 grants, totalling just over £60,000.

The Marsden Building Society Charitable Foundation aims to support projects in Lancashire focused on three key themes: financial well-being, societal inclusion, and the environment.
