Coronation Street actor Andy Whyment has spoken out in a post on Instagram, addressing rumours the show is “on its knees”. His statement came after multiple cobbles stars announced their exit from the show.
Andy Whyment has played Kirk Sutherland on Coronation Street since 2000. In recent weeks, several of his co-stars have revealed that they will be leaving in 2025.
It was rumoured ITV was facing a budget crisis with many stars axed from both Corrie and Emmerdale. Andy went straight to Instagram to deny these allegations and clear Coronation Street’s reputation.
Colson Smith revealed his exit from the show was ‘leaked’, as producers told him Craig Tinker’s time in Weatherfield has come to an end. Corrie legend Sue Cleaver who plays Eileen Grimshaw and Charlotte Jordan who plays Daisy Midgeley are also heading for the exit.
Andy took to Instagram to talk about rumours circulating in the press. He said: “There is a story about @coronationstreet in the press nearly every day at the moment. I’d just like to say that the show is not on its knees and there is most certainly not a cast revolt as one article has said. Please don’t believe everything you read, I for at least one cast member am extremely happy and feel very grateful to still be working on Coronation Street.”
His co-stars supported him in the comments. Jane Danson who plays Leanne said: “Amen to that. Also we are a cast and crew who care and respect each other deeply – through good times and bad . Through life and work. We are family xx.”
Alan Halsall, who plays Tyrone, added: “My brother x.” Claire Sweeney, who plays Cassie Plummer, said: “Well said darling, me too proud to be part of the Corrie team.”
