Councils provides update on missed bin collections after cold weather disruption

East Lancashire councils have provided updates about bin collections after the recent cold snap, which led to disruption.

The recent icy weather has impacted bin collections meaning collections for some people may have been missed.

Hyndburn Council said it has added “additional catch-up crew” to cover any missed collections last week.

It has urged people in the borough to leave waste and recycling at the usual collection point.

Waste or recycling due to be collected this week should be left out on your usual collection day.

A spokesperson said: “As the weather is due to improve this week, we have added an additional catch-up crew to cover any missed collections last week caused by snow and ice.

“If your waste/recycling was not collected as expected last week, please leave it in the usual collection point.

“Waste or recycling due to be collected this week should be left out on your usual collection day.

“Please note that as waste and recycling are collected by separate vehicles, those with two different bins to be collected might not be collected at the same time.”

Pendle Council has listed the changes to its collections, day-by-day, and said icy conditions have been particularly bad in Nelson and Colne. Bins were not collected on Saturday (January 11).

It is asking residents to “please bear with [them]” asking them to take bins in if they “can manage until your next collection”.

In addition to normal collections, the council’s plan is:

Tuesday, January 14

  • Normal bin collection – parts of Nelson (Halifax Road area)

  • Normal recycling collection (blue bins) – Barnoldswick, Kelbrook, Foulridge areas

  • Catch up on missed bin collection – Colne, Trawden, Laneshawbridge (zone 3,4,5)

Wednesday,  January 15

Thursday, January 16

  • If the weather improves we hope to have caught up on missed collections by Thursday.

  • Normal bin collections resumed

  • All bins to be returned to the property and not left out for collection

Blackburn Council has asked people to leave bins out for collection, if they were not emptied last week.

A spokesperson said: “Blackburn council If your bin hasn’t been emptied yet this week, please do leave it out for collection.

“Our teams are doing everything they can to catch up, but the icy conditions have made progress challenging.

“The good news is, [this] week looks much better and our crews will be working every day as a result, to make sure that all your bins are emptied.”

Rossendale Council said “schedules are likely to be affected for several days”.

A spokesperson said: “Due to recent snowfall and freezing temperatures, our waste and recycling teams are facing very challenging conditions.

“Collections will be attempted where it is safe and accessible. Areas with untreated roads, steep gradients, or compromised vehicle may experience delays. Schedules are likely to be affected for several days.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience. To help please leave your bins out until they are collected. We will collect additional side waste during delays”

Last week, Ribble Valley Council reported issues with frozen bins. It said frozen bins, that were not collected last week, will be collected this week.

A spokesperson said: “When temperatures drop below freezing there’s a chance that the contents in your bins can freeze and won’t empty properly from the mechanical emptying process.

“Unfortunately we cannot return to empty frozen bins but excess will be collected next week.”

Burnley Council said “additional resources are being deployed” to catch up on missed bin collections last week. It aims to have all outstanding collections completed by the end of the day on Friday (January 17).

A spokesperson said: “The recent snowfall and icy conditions caused disruption to the Council’s refuse and recycling service last week.

“Every effort was made to maintain normal service standards, however this unfortunately resulted in delays to some scheduled collections. We apologise to the residents that have not yet received their collection and any inconvenience caused.

“As the conditions have improved this week, additional resources are being deployed to continue catching up on any collections impacted by the weather conditions and aiming to have all outstanding collections completed by the close of business this Friday, January 17.

“If you still require a collection, please leave your bin/s at your usual collection point and the crew will return at the earliest opportunity.”
