Delays and disruption in Bolton following snow over the weekend

Schools have been forced to close and buses cancelled as the wintry weather brought disruption to the town today.

Bolton is covered by a yellow weather warning for snow and ice after much of the UK saw snow on Sunday, January 5.

Rivington and Blackrod High School shut due to the weather, but said they expected to reopen on January 7.

Pupils did not miss out on learning as they are taught remotely.

Turton Belmont Community Primary School was closed for the day.

Westhoughton High School opened from 9.30am and advised pupils to “wear sensible footwear” and put “extra layers on to keep warm.”

There were reports of buses being stuck on Church Street in Blackrod, with people warning others not to attempt to travel down it.

There were reports of delays on the roads around the town centre and on the motorway, with traffic slow moving.

The weather had mostly cleared up by about noon, and traffic returned to normal.

Buses through Bolton are facing huge disruption due to the weather today.

A tree collapsed on a bus stop in Bolton  preventing buses from accessing one estate.

The Bee Network has issued a list of bus services which have been affected.

The 537 services are unable to serve Eagley due to a fallen tree at the turning circle on Eagley Way, heading towards Bromley Cross.

The 535 services are unable to serve Belmont and will turn back at The Pineapple on Blackburn Road in Astley Bridge.

541 services are unable to serve Toppings Estate.

For Ramsbottom, 474 services will terminate at the town and will turn towards Bury as a 472 service.

In Horwich, 516 services are unable to serve Brazley Estate.

Also, 472 services will not serve Bury New Road and will terminate at Burnley Road and use the turning circle then return to Bury as a 474 service.

Another yellow warning has been issued from 5pm today to 10am on January 7, with a medium likelihood and a low impact.

The temperature is not expected to climb much higher than 2 degrees, with lows of 0 degrees.

Frequent sleet or snow showers are expected in the North West from Monday evening until Tuesday morning.

Icy stretches are also expected to develop on Monday evening due to wet surfaces from earlier rain and melting snow.

Members of the Bolton News Camera Club captured fun in the snow, sharing photos.

And young and old alike took to enjoying the snow while it lasted, building some impressive snow sculptures.

Temperatures will fall to a low of -4 on Wednesday in Bolton, before starting to rise again by the weekend. There are no weather warnings in place after Tuesday night.
