Dermatologist shares one product you should ‘stop wasting money on’

If you’ve got a consistent skincare routine, you’ll know that it can be pricey. But one dermatologist has explained that there’s a product you need to stop wasting your money on.

When it comes to lotions and potions you put on your face and body, you can be under the impression that more is better; however, dermatologist Dr Dray has put this rumour to bed, saying you need to “stop wasting money on eye creams, using so much,” highlighting that just a little bit does the trick.

She said that she’s watching people do skincare routines on social media, and “people are using a big glob of eye cream and going to town” on their face – but the under eye doesn’t need that much product.

To demonstrate how much product you need to be using on your under-eye area, she took an eye product, put her index finger under it, and drew a tiny line about half the size of her fingertip on it, saying: “That’s all you need,” reiterating that this amount was for the “upper and lower lid”.

Dr Dray said that you can even “get away with less” if you want to only “do the under eye area” and not your upper lid. She joked that one tube of eye cream should “last you a lifetime”.

The dermatologist even said that she doesn’t “personally use eye creams,” instead preferring to use her facial moisturiser in her eye area.

According to Olay UK, you should “use a pea-sized amount” of eye cream for each eye. They share that you should ” use your ring finger [to apply the cream] as the delicate eye area requires a delicate touch without too much pressure. Be very gentle while you dab, tap or lightly massage the cream in.”

A dermatologist told Shape that there’s a proper method for applying eye cream to get the maximum benefits from it. They reiterated that a pea-sized amount of cream for each eye is perfect, and you should ensure, first of all, that your hands are clean.

Use your ring finger to “dot eye cream in a semi-circle along the bone under your eye,” then “gently tap in”. Next, dot some eye cream “between the edge of your eye and temple,” then “under your brow line”.

If you are able to use the cream on your upper lid, the dermatologist said “go for it,” but just ensure that you’re “extra gentle” when putting it here.
