Diogo Jota told Kostas Tsimikas to recreate an assist from a previous game against Nottingham Forest before the pair combined for the Reds’ crucial equalizer in Tuesday night’s Premier League clash at the City Ground.

Jota and Tsimikas emerged as second-half substitutes with Forest leading 1-0, and Liverpool was level just two seconds after the game restarted, as Jota rose highest to head Tsimikas’ corner into the net.

It is the second time that the pair have combined for a goal in an away game against Forest, after Tsimikas crossed for Jota to score the only goal of the game in an FA Cup quarter-final in 2022.

Jota revealed that he mentioned the memory to Tsimikas as the pair prepared to enter the field. He told TNT Sports: “I actually said to him, we were watching the cup goal two or three years ago, where he passed it to me, and we were on the touchline there and I was just saying, ‘yeah, let’s go now and recreate the assist, take the corner,’ and it was a goal. It was one of those situations, everything went right, but I’m not happy because I think we could’ve won.”

Jota’s introduction sparked an upturn in Liverpool’s performance and he had several chances to add to his tally for the night. He added: “I love to score goals, I scored with my first touch today that gave the team momentum. I had two more chances that could’ve given us three points, unfortunately I couldn’t.”

On the impressive performance of Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels, Jota said: “I was telling my previous coaches at Wolves. I think he made two great saves, obviously you want to do better but I think he was good as well.”

On Liverpool’s unbeaten away record in the Premier League so far this season, he added: “I think it’s a long way [to go this season]. Every ground you go, even at home it’s always hard, it’s one more point, but obviously we wanted the win.”
