A series of drop-in sessions aimed at reducing suicide rates are set to be held in Cumberland libraries.
The events, part of a research project named ‘The Big Question’, will take place between Tuesday, January 14, and Friday, January 24.
They are aimed at understanding why suicide is prevalent in Cumberland and identifying strategies to help reduce these numbers.
Between January 2020 and December 2023, 303 people died by suspected suicide in Cumbria, with 56 per cent of these deaths occurring in Cumberland.
‘The Big Question’ project, funded by the NDA and organised by Cumberland Council and Liverpool John Moores University, are urging people to attend the drop-in events and participate in the survey.
The survey, open until January 31, 2025, is aimed at Cumberland residents aged over 18 to provide their insights into the issue.
The team will be available for discussions at various libraries in Cumberland on the following dates:
-
Tuesday, January 14, Whitehaven Library (10am-6pm)
-
Wednesday, January 15, Carlisle Library (10am-5.30pm)
-
Thursday, January 16, Workington Library (10am-5pm)

All locations will have private spaces for those who wish to talk to the team or access support and guidance from the suicide prevention and suicide bereavement support charity, Every Life Matters.
Lisa Brown, Cumberland Council’s deputy leader and adults and community health portfolio holder, said: “I would like to encourage residents from across Cumberland to provide their thoughts and insights on this issue.
“We must continue to improve suicide prevention action, not only to improve the support for those who have lost a loved one to suicide but also make support more available and accessible to those who have suicidal thoughts.
“These events are a great way for residents to learn more about what we are aiming to achieve in this space, and to access the support of Every Life Matters.”
