The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) will pay £25 to eligible households in areas where the temperatures has dropped to 0C or below for seven consecutive days.

Since the start of the new year, Cold Weather Payments have been triggered in 116 postcode areas located in England and Wales. To be eligible for the one-off payments, households need to be claiming certain benefits from the DWP.

The extra cash boost of £25 is to help the most vulnerable households keep their homes warm during periods of extreme cold weather. Qualifying benefits include Universal Credit, Income Support and Pension Credit among others.

Temperatures have plummeted in recent days leaving many areas facing sub-zero temperatures, with a low of -11.2C recorded in Cumbria on Friday night.

When temperatures are forecast to be, or recorded as, 0C or lower for a period of seven days in a row, Cold Weather Payments are triggered for the postcode areas covered by that weather station. So far this year, areas of Cumbria, Northumberland, Lancashire, Wales, Derbyshire and Yorkshire are among the places that temperatures have reached the threshold for payments to be made.

The Cold Weather Payment scheme runs each year, between November and March. According to the DWP, there are an estimated 3.9 million people eligible for the one-off payments. The threshold may be met several times over the winter months, meaning some postcode areas may get multiple payments.

According to the Met Office, the cold snap is now coming to an end with milder temperatures set to arrive in the UK this week. It means that is likely to be it for Cold Weather Payments for now, unless more sub-zero temperatures arrive before the end of March.

Temperatures will reach 12C or 13C in northern areas on Tuesday, causing snow to thaw, the weather agency said. However in the south of the country, there will be a more gradual recovery from the cold snap, with temperatures staying at around 8C.

It will be cloudy for the vast majority, but some sunshine is possible in southern coastal districts of England and eastern areas of Scotland, according to forecasts. Northern and western areas of the country could see some rain and drizzle as the week goes on.

Met Office spokesperson Andrea Bishop said: “There’s a north-south divide this week, with temperatures significantly milder across the north, with a more gradual recovery in the south. This will bring some thawing of lying snow in the north and some rain, whilst it will largely be drier in the south.

“After a very mild night in Scotland and Northern Ireland, we could wake to see some patchy frost in the south on Tuesday morning. The best of any sunshine will be on southern coastal districts of England, although eastern areas of Scotland may also see some brightness, but it will generally be a cloudy day for the vast majority.

“Temperatures will range from 8C in the south to 12C or 13C in the north. Northern and western areas see more in way of rain and drizzle this week, but for many of us, it should be a more settled week than of late. There is the risk of some mist and fog lingering in more southern areas, which we are keeping an eye on.”

Temperatures plummeted to -18.9C on Saturday morning in Altnaharra, Scotland – the UK’s coldest January temperature in 15 years. The average low in northern Scotland for this time of year is about 0.3C, while for England, overnight lows are about 1.5C to 1.6C.
