Households in 116 areas of the UK are now eligible for Cold Weather Payments from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP).

Cold Weather Payments are made to people who are on certain types of benefits, such as Income Support, Pension Credit and Universal Credit. The extra cash boost of £25 is to help the most vulnerable households keep their homes warm during periods of extreme cold weather.

Since the beginning of January, the UK has seen sub-zero temperatures in all four corners of the UK. For Cold Weather Payments to be triggered, an area must see temperatures that are recorded as, or forecasted to be, OC or below for seven consecutive days.

The first Cold Weather Payments of the year were triggered on January 2, in areas of Cumbria and Northumberland. And in recent days, further payments have been triggered in areas of Yorkshire, Lancashire, Derbyshire and Wales.

The Cold Weather Payment scheme runs each year, between November and March. Cold Weather Payments were previously triggered in mid-November during the first cold snap of the season.

There are an estimated 3.9 million people eligible for Cold Weather Payments under the DWP scheme.

The cold snap is set to continue overnight on Friday before more mild air reaches the UK over the weekend, according to the Met Office. Friday night is predicted to bring the lowest temperatures of the cold snap in parts of Scotland and northern England, with temperatures between -15C and-20C possible.
