East Lancs vulnerable reminded of flu jab as hospital cases soar

East Lancashire residents have been reminded to get their flu jabs if eligible as local hospital admissions from the virus soar.

Across the North-West hospital admissions of people suffering serious influenza symptoms are rising and with high levels of circulating within communities.

The region’s NHS bosses are reminding eligible people it’s not too late to book flu vaccinations to protect vulnerable family, friends, and themselves as soon as possible.

The latest published data shows 3,800 people have been hospitalised in the North-West with flu in the week from December 23 to 29.

Dr Linda Charles-Ozuzu, regional director of commissioning for the NHS vaccination programme, said: “We currently have high levels of flu circulating in our region.

“The flu vaccination is the best way to help prevent serious disease and lessen symptoms should you develop flu.

“I’d encourage all eligible people to take the opportunity and have the vaccination as soon as possible.

“It’s very important for people to have their flu vaccination and protect themselves, their family and friends who could be at risk.

“Flu is a serious illness and can have serious consequences to vulnerable people.

” Speak to your GP or Pharmacist about getting your flu vaccination”.

The last date you will be able to get your flu vaccination is March 31.

Those eligible for a free flu vaccination include:

  • people aged 50 and over;

  • those aged between six months and 49 years with a specified health condition;

  • pregnant women;

  • children who were aged two and three years old on August 31, 2022;

  • primary school-aged children and secondary school-aged children in years seven, eight and nine;

  • those in care homes and carers;

  • frontline health and social care staff.

Those eligible for the flu vaccine may also be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccination as well.
