Find out where the roadworks and closures are in north and west Cumbria this month

Plenty of work is being undertaken across north and west Cumbria in January, and beyond, so we’ve gathered together a list of some of the key roadworks and closures coming up, according to the Cumberland Council website:

English Street, Carlisle – Closed from January 6 until April 27

English Street will close on Monday until April to allow Cumberland Council to continue work on the Southern Gateway Project. A way for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times and a suitable alternative route for north east bound vehicles will be signed and available via The Crescent, Lowther Street, Victoria Place, Georgian Way, Castle Way, Shaddongate, Charlotte Street, Victoria Viaduct and Devonshire Street.

(Image: Cumberland Council)Victoria Place, Carlisle – Roadworks from January 6 until January 17

Cumberland Council will be undertaking roadworks from January 6 until January 17 on the signalised junction of Georgian Way and Victoria Place. Multi-way signals will be in place to manage traffic but delays are likely.

(Image: Cumberland Council)Cumwhinton Drive, Carlisle – Closed until January 10

There is a partial road closure in place between Monday and Friday from 8am until 5.30pm to allow Metcalfe Civil Engineering to carry out drainage works. An alternative route for vehicles can be found via the unrestricted sections of Cumwhinton Drive, Garlands Road and C1040 Cumwhinton Road.

(Image: Cumberland Council)Scalegate Road and Ridley Road, Carlisle – Roadworks from January 13 to February 21

Northern Gas will be undertaking maintenance and utility repair works on sections of Scalegate Road and Ridley Road for the next month. There will be multi-way traffic lights in place but delays are likely.

(Image: Cumberland Council)Junction 41, M6 – Lane closures from January 6 – 7

National Highways will be completing work along a section of the M6 by Junction 41from 6am on January 6 until 8pm on January 7. There will be lane closures on both of these days and delays are possible.

(Image: Cumberland Council)Main Street, Cleator – roadworks on January 8 and January 9 – 11

Openreach will be completing roadworks on Main Street in Cleator on January 8 with two-way signals in place to control the traffic. Delays are likely. The following day, Fibrus will begin work from outside of Flosh Farm House to outside number 33 with multi-way signals in place. Again, delays are likely.

(Image: Cumberland Council)Cleator Moor to Ennerdale Bridge road – closed between January 9 and 10

A section of road of the C4017 near Cleator Moor from its junction with the U4434 to its junction with the C4004 Cold Fell will be closed as Openreach undertakes pole maintenance. A suitable alternative route for vehicles will be signed and available via the unrestricted sections of the C4017, C4004 Cold Fell, Kirkland Road, West Road, U4026, Rowrah Road, Arlecdon Parks Road, A5086, Frizington Road and Wath Bridge.

(Image: Cumberland Council)A595 Holmrook and Ravenglass – closure and speed limit from January 6 until February 22

A section of the A595 Ravenglass from its junction with Corney Fell Road will be closed between 7pm and 5am as Cumberland Council resurfaces the carriageway. The closure extends in an overall northerly direction for approx. 3.6km. A speed limit of 30mph will be in place between 5am and 7pm. A suitable alternative route for vehicles during the closure will be available via the unrestricted sections of the A595, A5092, A590, A591 and A66.
