Flood alerts issued for areas around rivers Cumbria

Flood alerts have been issued for several areas around rivers in Cumbria.

Information on the government’s ‘Check for Flooding’ website says flooding is possible from 5pm today and is forecast to affect locations near the Upper River Eden, with low-lying land and roads expected to be most affected, particularly around the River Eden and other watercourses, from Kirkby Stephen to Temple Sowerby including low-lying areas around Brough, Warcop, Great Ormside and Appleby.

Flood gates at Appleby are closed.

Weather conditions are expected to improve tomorrow afternoon and no further flooding is expected and property flooding is not expected in this area.

Lower River Eden is also affected, and according to the website, flooding is possible from 12am on January 1, 2025, and is forecast to affect locations near the river with low-lying land and roads expected to be most affected, particularly around the River Eden and its tributaries from its confluence with the River Irthing through Crosby-on-Eden and Carlisle to the Solway Firth at Rockcliffe.

A flood alert has also been issued for the areas around the rivers Caldew and Petteril.

In this area, flooding is possible from 2.30pm today (December 31) and is forecast to affect locations near the Rivers Caldew and Petteril, with low-lying land and roads expected to be most affected, particularly around the Rivers Caldew and Petteril from the Lakeland Fells to Carlisle including Greystoke, Newton Reigny, Plumpton, Stockdalewath, Sebergham and Denton Holme in Carlisle.

Take care and avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water.
