Free virtual work experience course launched for those interested in trains

TransPennine Express (TPE) has introduced a free virtual work experience programme for those interested in careers in rail.

TPE has collaborated with the careers platform Springpod to create a course that explores various aspects of work at TPE.

This ‘behind-the-scenes look’ at the industry covers the creation of timetables, the intricacies of running trains smoothly, and what it’s like to work in roles such as a station assistant or onboard catering.

The course comprises eight modules featuring ‘hands-on activities’ and ‘essential employability skills’ like communication, teamwork, and leadership.

Participants can complete the modules at their own pace.

Nicola Buckley, TPE’s people director, said: “Whether you are just starting out, fancy a career change, or just want to find out more about working on the railway, our virtual work experience course is a good place to start.

“It has been designed to give people transferable skills that are going to help build confidence to apply for opportunities either with TPE or other employers in the rail industry and beyond.

“TPE is now the fastest-growing rail operator in the UK, and we want to provide employment opportunities within the communities we serve, as well as provide reliable services across the North of England and Scotland.”

The programme is open to people aged 13 and above and will run until May 5, 2025.

Attendees will receive a certificate of completion, useful for boosting CVs, UCAS statements, and other applications.
