Fresh warning as temperatures to plummet to -4°C overnight

A fresh weather warning has been issued for Blackburn with Darwen as temperatures are set to plunge again tonight (January 2).

Warnings for snow and ice are already in place across the borough and the rest of East Lancashire after a wet and cold start to 2025.

A yellow warning for ice was issued yesterday lasting until 10am today after temperatures reached around -5°C.

A fresh warning has been issued by the Met Office today warning people that icy conditions are likely once again as temperatures hit -4°C.

Between 10pm and 1am, these temperatures could feel as cold as -7°C.

The warning is in place from 5pm today until 10am tomorrow (January 3).

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Scattered wintry showers will be replaced by a longer spell of rain and sleet for a time on Thursday night, particularly across western Scotland and Northern Ireland.

“As temperatures dip below freezing, this will lead to a risk of ice formation on untreated surfaces, especially inland.

“Keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy. Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush, reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls.

“If you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery. Similarly, if cycling, try and stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated.”

The warning covers all of East Lancashire and large parts of the rest of the county, excluding coastal areas such as Blackpool and Lytham.
