Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge has slammed the Spanish media after recent reports suggesting Trent Alexander-Arnold is closing in on a move to Real Madrid.

Speculation continues over the Liverpool vice-captain’s future as he enters the final few months of his contract at Anfield. Alexander-Arnold will be able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club from tomorrow should he wish to do so.

The right-back has been offered a new deal by the Reds, although he is also being heavily linked with a move to Madrid. In fact, recent reports from Spain have claimed that he has already made a decision on his future.

Marca has reported that Alexander-Arnold has already told Liverpool’s directors that he wants to make the move to the Spanish capital, while AS has suggested that the 26-year-old already has “one foot in Real Madrid”.

Alexander-Arnold though appears to have taken a dim view on the speculation coming out of Spain. He made a talking gesture with his hand as he celebrated his goal during the 5-0 win over West Ham on Sunday, while he also avoided more questions over his future with reporters afterward.

And Reds hero Aldridge believes Alexander-Arnold’s actions spoke volumes, with the former striker having first-hand experience of how the Spanish media operates.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold’s goal celebration was telling against West Ham,” Aldridge wrote in his column for the ECHO. “Do your talking on the pitch and carry one. Only he and his agent knows what options he’s got and what he wants to do.

“But I played in Spain for two seasons. Marca writes a load of rubbish. Every day, it’s a football paper that has to make stories up. And AS. There might be other ones now too since I played there.

“They’ve got to make stories, they’ve got to get stories. I don’t know whether they have made this one up about Trent deciding to go to Real Madrid, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

“They are just surmising because they have to make headlines every single day from somewhere. I think they are taking a punt and having a guess.

“Having said that, the longer it goes on, then it does look increasingly more likely that he will go to Real Madrid anyway.

“But as long as he keeps on creating, scoring goals, playing well and helps us win the league and trophies this season, that’s all we can expect. Then see what happens in the summer.”
