‘I’m a Stone Roses fan – there’s a seriously underrated song no one ever talks about’

Fans of The Stone Roses are going wild over one of the band’s most underrated songs.

The “absolutely brilliant” track does not get spoken of as much as hits like I Am the Resurrection or She Bangs the Drums but still holds a place in the hearts of dedicated fans. The Ian Brown-fronted band has just two albums, with a self-titled effort released in 1989 and the platinum follow-up, Second Coming, released in 1994.

The Stone Roses disbanded soon after, with drummer Reni departing just a few weeks before the band was meant to tour. While the band got back together for a series of reunion shows between 2011 and 2017, just two singles were released, with no appetite from the band to work on a new album. It has left fans of the band seeking out deep cuts, and one song that appears to be thoroughly underrated.

Taking to The Stone Roses’ Reddit group, one user asked what people believed was their “most underrated song?”. They wrote: “For me it’s Good Times, absolutely brilliant track that no one seems to talk that much about.”

Other fans of the band also suggested songs from Second Coming, with many reminiscing about the “different” sound from what less-dedicated fans were used to.

Another suggested: “Love Spreads or Begging You.” One replied: “Love Spreads is not underrated.” But a third user suggested it could be underrated, along with the whole of Second Coming.

They wrote: “Lots of people were quite disappointed. A lot of people didn’t like it at that time. Since then it’s just merged into their catalogue and feels less like a diversion for fans.”

Mersey Paradise was also tipped as one of their more underrated songs, with the original poster suggesting it was “too short” but “very good”. Another added: “Absolute tune. And, I maintain that of all their ‘first period’ stuff, Mersey Paradise has the best production. It has a clarity to it that none of their other stuff really matches. Everyone shines, but Reni in particular is sublime on this song.”

The Manchester band’s reunion saw the release of two new singles but no new record, and guitarist John Squire has since shared why.

Speaking to MOJO Magazine at the time of the reunion, he said: “Both [previous albums] were really difficult to record, so an album would’ve been beyond us. That last tour was an obligation, we all knew we weren’t signing up for anything more, so, in that sense, it was a satisfying ending.

Squire has since gone on to release an album with Liam Gallagher, the aptly titled ‘Liam Gallagher & John Squire’ while The Stones’ frontman Brown has released a series of solo releases.
