It’s the question that has been on every Liverpool fan’s lips for the last few hours: is today’s game against Manchester United going ahead?

Heavy overnight snowfall in the North West of England has put the game in doubt, but — for now, at least — the game is still scheduled to go ahead.

Liverpool City Council’s Safety Advisory Group held a meeting on Sunday morning but a final decision was not taken; the group is set to reconvene at midday UK time with a view to making a final decision on whether it is safe for the match to take place.

A Liverpool Football Club statement issued on Sunday morning said: “A safety meeting was held this morning to assess the weather and travel conditions for today’s fixture against Manchester United at Anfield. At this stage the match is planned to go ahead as normal and every effort is being made to get the game on. A further safety meeting will take place again at midday to assess the latest conditions. We will update supporters just as soon as we can.”

The playing surface inside Anfield will not be an issue; it’s the conditions outside the stadium and supporter safety that will ultimately decide whether today’s game goes ahead.

Elsewhere in the region, the runway at Liverpool John Lennon Airport was closed for several hours on Sunday morning, but reopened at 10:15am GMT as conditions improved.

The weather is forecast to improve on Merseyside as the day goes on, but the question is whether he conditions will improve enough, and in time, for the 4.30pm GMT kick-off to go ahead as scheduled.
