ITV Emmerdale star Gemma Oaten left ‘shattered’ after unexpected loss

Former Emmerdale star Gemma Oaten devoted a post to her friend and colleague Paul Hutton who sadly passed away. The actress took to Instagram to share the news with fans who flocked to support the star.

Fans of the ITV soap may recognise Gemma Oaten as playing the role of Rachel Breckle in Emmerdale from 2011 to 2015, where she received a nomination for the British Soap Award for Best Newcomer. In the Dales, her character had a one night stand with Jai Sharma, eventually leading to the birth of their child Archie.

Gemma originally left the soap after her character took the blame for an arson attack on Home Farm, as instructed by Charity who wanted to destroy Jai. She returned for a seven month stint in 2015, but it was in 2019 that the villagers learnt Rachel had died from a cardiac arrest.

After viewers learned that her character had been killed off, Gemma took to Instagram and wrote: “‘And so Rachel has joined her soap family in the sky. What a journey it’s been. I got the role of Rachel Breckle in Emmerdale within a year of graduating from Drama school and it changed my life. I always dreamed I’d be part of the show one day, and as many of you know my struggles as a teen, you’ll understand why it really was a dream come true.”

She added that it was “the end of an era”, and since leaving the soap Gemma has had roles in Holby City, Rise of the Footsoldier: The Pat Tate Story, and even appeared briefly in Coronation Street.

Gemma also starred in 2018 pantomime Beauty and the Beast at London’s Shaw Theatre where she worked with stage legend Paul. It was Paul whom Gemma’s most recent Instagram post was dedicated towards.

Although his cause of death is unknown, Gemma wanted to share the news with fans. She wrote: “I can’t believe this is happening. You were one of the best – funny, kind, caring and incredibly talented. My heart is shattered knowing you’re no longer here to brighten our lives.

“Rest in peace, wonderful man. You will be loved forever and always.” Accompanying the caption was a few snaps of the pair in their costumes, laughing together. She then added: “This is how I remember you. Always making us smile #ForeverInOurHearts.”

Fans showed their support in the comments, @sianita82 penned: “He was my dance teacher and choreographer, the only one in the 90s who made me think I was good enough dance-wise (he loved an underdog). I can’t comprehend it. Sending you love and strength Gemma”

@rosnrow echoed: “Can’t believe he’s gone. What an absolute character, so full of life” followed by a teary emoji. Another user @lucindaheavyside added: “Sending love your way Gem.”

Paul informed fans he was struggling earlier in 2024, and admitted: “This is not a good time. I’m safe, so don’t worry, but oh my goodness life and family slap you sideways when you least expect it sometimes.”

The actor was well known for his role in Billy Elliot The Musical, and in 2023 he revealed that the lack of work in the industry was tough. Nevertheless, he shared: “You all know how much I love theatre. I’m so passionate about it. It’s given me a lifetime of joy and I’ve met some incredible people/friends along the way.”
