Jamie Carragher believes both Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk will sign new contracts at Liverpool, insisting he can’t see the former leaving the club soon.

Both players, along with Trent Alexander-Arnold, are set to be out of contract at the end of the season, with speculation continuing over their futures. All three players will be able to negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs from the start of January should they choose to do so.

Recent reports have suggested that both Salah and Van Dijk have already agreed new three-year deals to extend their stays at Anfield. The former though poured cold water on those rumors after admitting he’s still a long way off coming to an agreement with Liverpool.

That has once again raised fears over his future among Reds fans, although former defender Carragher isn’t too concerned.

“It’s nothing new now, we’re probably used to that now a little bit with Salah coming out a couple of times over the last few months about his contract situation,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“I was unhappy with that at the end of the Southampton game, but as I said, it’s normal because he’s getting interviewed a lot because he’s getting man of the match a lot for Liverpool.

“I’m at the stage now with Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, I’m not too bothered really what they say about the situation. I do expect it to get sorted on both counts, maybe I’m being too optimistic.

“I can’t see a situation where Mo Salah is not starting next season at Liverpool. I can’t believe Mo Salah or the club would allow that to happen.”

Carragher’s comments come just over a month after he slammed Salah for voicing his disappointment at a lack of an offer from Liverpool – the 32-year-old has since received one, although it seems the club still has work to do in order to convince him to stay.

“The most important thing for Liverpool this season is not the future of Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk or Trent Alexander-Arnold. It is winning the Premier League,” Carragher said last month. “That is more important than any of those players. If he continues to put comments out, or his agent puts cryptic tweets out, that’s selfish. That’s thinking about themselves, and not the football club.”
