‘Knife amnesty’ to be held in bid to get dangerous blades off the street

A “knife amnesty” event will be held next week to give people to chance to give up unwanted blades.

The event will be held at the Ellesmere Centre in Walkden and will also give people the change to meet neighbourhood police officers.

Police say that the amnesty event will be a way of making the area safer and getting dangerous weapons off the streets.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “In order to make the area a little safer we will be holding a knife amnesty event at the Ellesmere Centre in Walkden on Wednesday January 15 between the times of 10am and 12noon.

“If you have any unwanted knives or bladed articles please hand them to us, however please transport them safely either in a sealed container or wrapped up in cardboard sealed with strong tape.

“It’s a great way for the community to get behind our initiative to get dangerous weapons off the streets.

“We really encourage people to use this opportunity to dispose of knives safely plus it will be a great way for you to meet the local neighbourhood policing team.”

Anyone concerned about knife crime in their area can call police on 101 or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 11.
