Latest update on £20m Carlisle regeneration project

Cumberland Council has reported progress on the Carlisle Southern Gateway regeneration project.

Recent developments include the placement of new kerb lines, drainage systems, bus shelters, streetlights, and street furniture.

Landscaping work has also been undertaken to improve the city centre’s environment and enhance biodiversity.

The £6.6 million project, funded by the UK Government, is part of the broader Southern Gateway initiative, which secured £19.7 million for enhancements to Carlisle’s highways and pedestrian networks.

A historic well was discovered during excavation work near the Citadel, and plans are in place to integrate the well into the pavement design.

Currently, English Street is closed to traffic for about 16 weeks for essential work on drainage, duct crossings, and the carriageway.

However, pedestrian access is being maintained, and Cumberland Council advises the public to follow signage and take care when navigating temporary routes.

At Botchergate Junction, progress includes the removal and backfilling of old public toilets and the use of temporary traffic measures to facilitate ongoing construction.

Construction work near The Griffin is set to begin soon, with plans for the installation of new kerb lines, improved drainage, paving, landscaping, a dedicated cycle path, and new seating areas.

Pedestrian access will continue to be available, but walkways may change as work advances.

The council has advised the public to watch for signage, follow temporary routes, and be aware of heavy machinery and construction vehicles in the vicinity.

The council has encouraged continued support for local businesses during the ongoing regeneration efforts and has expressed gratitude for the public’s patience with the ongoing works.
