Liverpool fans took their chance to make their feelings clear on Virgil van Dijk’s future as the club celebrated the anniversary of his arrival at Anfield.
Van Dijk is, of course, one of three players – alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah – facing an uncertain future with their contracts expiring at the end of the season. Although recent reports suggested the Netherlands international had agreed to a new three-year deal, it seems Liverpool still has work to do to get him and his teammates tied down.
Having now entered the New Year, all three players are able to negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs should they wish to do so. That will be a particularly big concern in Alexander-Arnold’s case, with Real Madrid having made its intentions clear after failing with a bid before the January transfer window had even opened.

It’s a tactic that Van Dijk will know all about, having been signed by Liverpool in a similar fashion. The Reds completed the defender’s signing back in December 2017 before he officially joined the club on January 1, 2018.
Liverpool celebrated the seven-year anniversary of Van Dijk’s arrival with a post on social media showing the Dutchman on his first day at the club. With his current situation still up in the air, fans didn’t hesitate to send their messages to the club in response.
“How about making the extension official today as well,” wrote one user. “Announce it,” was the response from another.
“How about he officially signs a new contract too,” replied one fan, while another sounded a more desperate tone as he wrote: “Please we need the contract signed.”
Van Dijk has already hinted that he wants to stay at Anfield, having insisted that he still has plenty of years at the top level left in him.
“I love the club, the club loves me,” Van Dijk told Amazon Prime last week. “I love the fans, the fans love me and it is a very good foundation to be successful. In my opinion I can play for another three, four years at least at the highest level. We will see what the future brings.”
