Man charged with manslaughter after death of 16-year-old schoolgirl

A man is to appear in court later today charged with the manslaughter of a 16-year-old schoolgirl.

Tilly Wooler, from Todmorden, West Yorks, died in July last year after she was rushed to hospital when her friends alerted paramedics. She was transferred from A&E to an intensive care unit at Calderdale Royal Hospital, but tragically died.

Michael Shaw, aged 24, of Bride Street, Todmorden is due to appear at Bradford magistrates’ court today (Tuesday) charged with her manslaughter. He is also accused of two counts of the supply of class A and B drugs.

The charges follow an investigation into Tilly’s death by Calderdale CID. Last month an inquest opening heard Tilly’s provisional cause of death was multiple organ failure, MDMA intoxication and Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a rare genetic disorder.

In September Todmorden High School headteacher Gill Shirt paid tribute to Tilly in a letter to parents. She described the Year 11 student as an ‘extraordinary young lady’ and expressed the school’s sorrow at her death.

Ms Shirt added: “Tilly was an extraordinary young lady. We will hold onto our fond memories of Tilly and are thankful that our staff were invited to attend Tilly’s funeral.”
