Man found with ‘gun’ after altercation between two boat owners on canal

A man allegedly brandished a ‘gun’ in a row with another boat owner on a Cheshire canal. Officers were called out to reports of an altercation between two boat owners on the Trent and Mersey Canal in Lostock Gralam, near Northwich, at 2.50pm yesterday (January 15).

Cheshire Police says the caller reported that one of the men was possibly armed with a weapon. Officers, armed police and the police helicopter all descended on the canal.

A 25-year-old man, from Winsford, was later arrested in Marston on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. Inspector Paul Heatley, of Cheshire Police’s Northwich Local Policing Unit, said: “We would like to reassure residents that this is an isolated incident and there is no risk to the general public.

“There were no reports of any injuries during the incident one man is currently in custody at this time where he is assisting us with our enquires. Officers remain in attendance at the scene to provide reassurance and searches are also ongoing in the area.
