Manchester United have learned they will have to complete a sale or two in order to meet Paris Saint-Germain’s demand to sign Nuno Mendes.

The former Sporting Clube de Portugal left-back has emerged as a potential candidate to reinforce Ruben Amorim’s defensive options. Mendes worked under Amorim in Lisbon for two years before joining the French champions in 2022.

The 22-year-old would bring added value to the squad, having an understanding of the manager’s system at a time when Amorim needs it most. The Independent report he would come at a cost of £50million (€60m), with just over a year left on his contract.

FootMercato add the left-back rejected PSG’s latest contract offer as they look to tie him to a new deal at Parc des Princes amid interest from sides across Europe and beyond.

It’s said there is ‘no chance’ that PSG would allow Mendes to leave in the January transfer window however, and they are keen to continue negotiating over a new contract. But PSG will face a tougher decision in the summer if Mendes doesn’t sign a new deal and will face losing him for free in 2026.

Furthermore, journalist Santi Aouna claims Mendes is ‘very interested’ in a reunion with his former coach Amorim at Old Trafford. However, PSG are not ‘overly worried’ about his future as negotiations over a new deal are set to continue between the club and the player’s representatives.

With that said, United are unlikely to make an approach for the Portuguese defender this month. MEN Sport understands that United are not actively targeting the left-back position in this transfer window.

Instead, the club hierarchy are expected to be in the market for a left-back once the season concludes in the summer.
