Manchester Airport closes runways due to ‘significant’ snow

Manchester Airport has been forced to close its runways again as its team work to clear snow.

In a statement posted to X, the airport said there has been a “significant levels of snow” this morning (January 9) which has lead to the closure.

Manchester Airport explained: “Our runways are temporarily closed due to significant levels of snow, as our teams work to clear them as quickly as possible.

“The safety of our passengers is our top priority, and we appreciate your patience during this time. Please check with your airline for the latest flight information and allow extra travel time today.”

It also promised to update those travelling “as soon as possible”.

Over the last few days, Manchester Airport has been forced to close its runways temporarily on multiple occasions due to heavy snow.

Some days, the airport has opened and closed its runways more than once to ensure the safety of its staff and passengers.

The heavy snow closures come just over a week after the airport experienced disruption due to heavy fog on December 27, 2024.

All flights from the airport were either delayed or disrupted, with flights to Zurich, Amsterdam and London being cancelled in the evening.

Snow is now causing havoc with the airport warning that upon reopening the runways, passengers should still expect some delays.

Airports across the country are having similar issues and have also had to close temporarily this week.
