Manchester United handed nightmare January transfer window blow as Marcus Rashford move ‘blocked’

Manchester United return to action on Thursday evening at home to Premier League basement team Southampton (kick-off: 8pm).

Ruben Amorim’s side will have been buoyed by their recent results, with an impressive draw at Liverpool followed by last weekend’s victory over Arsenal on penalties, despite playing with 10 men for over an hour. United must now look to replicate recent performances with three home games to come.

After Thursday’s game against the Saints, United face Brighton before taking on Rangers in the Europa League. The Reds will know that there is still plenty of work to be done with the Janaury transfer window open.

But PSR constraints mean that departures are more likely this month. Below are some of the latest headlines from around Old Trafford…

Kerkez update

Liverpool are reportedly set to beat Manchester United and City to the signing of Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez.

The i Paper claims that Liverpool, City and United have already started to make contact with the player’s representatives. However, it is said that the Hungarian favours a move to Merseyside over Manchester.

The Manchester Evening News’ Isaac Seelochan says: “This would be a nightmare blow for United, who desperately need a left-sided wing-back suited to Amorim’s system. Kerkez would be an excellent signing, with his attacking qualities a perfect fit for Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, but it appears unlikely that he will move to Old Trafford with Liverpool currently a more attractive proposition.”

Rashford latest

Manchester United will reportedly not allow Marcus Rashford to join another Premier League club this month.

The Mirror reports that United’s stance is set to leave Chelsea, Tottenham and West Ham – all of whom have shown signs of interest in Rashford – bitterly disappointed. AC Milan and Barcelona have been among the European clubs linked with a move for the 27-year-old.

The Manchester Evening News’ Isaac Seelochan says: “This makes sense for January with Rashford only ever likely to leave on loan with clubs not willing to spend big this month. It will be interesting to see United’s stance in the summer, though, if they wish to sell, with Premier League clubs being the most likely to be able to afford him.”
