Meadow Mill residents promised date to return home after power supply restored

Power is being restored to apartments in a converted Stockport mill that flooded two weeks ago – with residents promised an update on when they can return to their homes.

Electricians working at Meadow Mill have started restoring the electricity supply to all apartments in the building using a temporary power source.

This is taking place alongside tests to safety systems which are due to finish by the end of the week.

A power switchover from the temporary supply to a permanent connection through Electricity North West is planned for Saturday, January 18.

The building’s water supply has also been reconnected while the water pipes are being cleaned, but tenants have been told not to use water in their apartments while this takes place.

In an update shared with leaseholders (January 13), CERT told residents they will be updated after the switchover with a date when they can return to their homes

The company said: “The freeholder’s electricians have been able to commence re-commissioning the electricity supply to all apartments with the use of the interim power supply to the Landlord areas.”

It added: “Switch over from the Landlord’s interim power supply to Electricity North West’s permanent power supply from the substation is being targeted for Saturday, January 18, subject to all replacement equipment, cables and materials being on site by Thursday, January 16.

“Following a successful change over, the freeholder will be able to confirm a date for reoccupation of the apartments.”

Residents in the mill have endured a nightmare two weeks after flooding made their homes unsafe overnight on New Year’s Eve.

The car park and ground floor were submerged in water and emergency services had to rescue a number of tenants who were left trapped inside the building.

Once out of the mill, they were left with no option other than staying with friends or family members, or booking hotels costing hundreds of pounds.

A small number of residents moved back into the building after running out of funds to pay for temporary accommodation, despite the lack of power and water.

They described “freezing” conditions as temperatures plummeted below zero some nights.

Ten days after the floods hit Stockport insurance provider AXA agreed to provide accommodation for those unable to return to their apartments in the mill.

Meadow Mill was first built around 1880 and was turned into a residential block when renovations finished in May 2021.
