Mohamed Salah has hit back at Jamie Carragher, suggesting the former Liverpool defender might be “obsessed” with him after his latest contract message.

Carragher had urged Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold to follow Virgil van Dijk’s example after the Egyptian’s latest social media activity amid the ongoing contract wranglings at Anfield.

Salah posted a picture of himself, Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk in action during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United without any caption, seemingly in a message to the club as the trio’s future remains up in the air.

All three players are set to see their contracts expire at the end of the season, and Salah has had plenty to say on his situation over the past couple of months, while Alexander-Arnold is the subject of increased interest from Real Madrid, with the Spanish giant stepping up its attempts to sign him in the January transfer window.

That has led Carragher to suggest the pair should be following Van Dijk’s example, with the Liverpool captain not courting as much speculation as his teammates.

“You know what I would say? I would say Virgil van Dijk has come out of this whole situation this season, as the captain of the club, in a higher esteem,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“The way he’s conducted himself, his performances on the pitch, the way he’s led the team, the way he was yesterday as well, and he hasn’t got involved in too much around this.

“It’s obviously a really important time for all three players, we know that, but I think rather than speak about Trent Alexander-Arnold or Mo Salah, I’d probably like to pay tribute to Virgil van Dijk. I think he’s come across as a real statesman with the way he’s handled it.

“He’s been asked questions, he’s knocked it away, he’s here to win the league, he wants to do his utmost for Liverpool, and fingers crossed he signs. I think the other two could maybe look at Virgil van Dijk and take a leaf out of his book.”

Salah has now hit back at Carragher. The 32-year-old reposted the video of Carragher giving his thoughts on X, along with the message: “I’m starting to think you’re obsessed with me,” accompanied by a winking emoji.

Carragher has since responded to Salah, saying: “I’ve always been obsessed with you @MoSalah hopefully that obsession will continue next season.”

Despite Carragher’s hopes, Salah has recently indicated that he and the club are still far away from an agreement on a new contract. The Egyptian is now able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club, should he wish to do so, which may pile more pressure on Liverpool.
