Mumbai: According to the FIR, 38-year-old Japan Seth hails from Vadodara and has been living in Dubai since 2022. He is employed as an executive director at an international company that manufactures gadgets. In December 2024, Seth, along with his wife, two children, and a maid, travelled to Vadodara for a family function. They stayed there from December 14 to December 30.
On December 30, the family departed from Vadodara and arrived at Mumbai airport. They carried nine bags, including three trolley bags. They checked in five bags. A handbag contained gold ornaments, including earrings, necklaces, a bracelet, a ring, and other items. These gold ornaments were kept in a black pouch inside the handbag.
On December 31, at 2 am, their IndiGo flight (6E-1511) departed from Mumbai and landed in Dubai at 4am. After reaching home around 7.30am, when they opened the handbag to store the ornaments in a cupboard, they discovered that the gold ornaments were missing. The missing items included two rings, two necklaces, a bracelet, an earring, a chain, and a pendant, collectively valued at Rs 7.2 lakh.
Seth returned to India to search for the ornaments at his Vadodara house and enquired with the maid’s husband but could not find them. He then approached the local police. At Vadodara airport, the Central Industrial Security Force checked the baggage scanning images and confirmed that the gold ornaments were in the handbag at that time.
On January 5, Seth approached the Sahar police. When CISF officers at Mumbai airport reviewed the baggage scanning images, they found that a few ornaments were missing from the bag. Realising that the ornaments were likely stolen at the airport, Seth filed a complaint with the Sahar police. The police subsequently registered the case under Section 303(2) (theft) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
