New peer support group for mums launches in Brampton

A social enterprise dedicated to supporting maternal mental health has launched a new support group in Brampton.

Happy Mums announced the formation of its Brampton group, which will meet every Thursday from 10am to 11am at Brampton Community Centre.

The initiative is designed for mothers with children of all ages, and aims to offer a safe, non-judgmental space to share experiences.

It aims to create an environment where mums can connect over a hot drink and receive peer support.

Each session will have a dedicated helper to entertain children, allowing mothers time to focus on their own well-being.

Abi Wilson, Brampton’s community engagement coordinator for Happy Mums, said: “We are thrilled to bring the Happy Mums support group to Brampton.

“This group is all about creating a community where mums can let go of societal expectations and simply be honest.”

Since its inception in 2015, Happy Mums has provided support to over 100 women each year.

According to their surveys, 90 per cent of mums who complete their impact survey report an increased ability to manage their mental health thanks to being part of the groups.

The Brampton group launch is part of Happy Mums’ ongoing mission to expand maternal mental health support, making it accessible to communities across the region, including in Wigton, Cockermouth, and Workington.

As part of this initiative, they are seeking volunteers for roles including facilitators, helpers, and welcomers.

A Happy Mums group member, aged 28, said: “I often felt uncomfortable going to mum-and-toddler groups; they can feel competitive and cliquey.

“Happy Mums isn’t like that at all.

“It’s a place where you can just be yourself—not just ‘mum’—and talk about things you’d never say at the school gate, like, ‘I don’t enjoy being a mum most of the time.’

“I don’t know what I would have done without this group.”

Lucinda Bray, managing director of Happy Mums, added: “Brampton is a wonderful location to host a Happy Mums group, offering peer support not only to mums in Brampton but also to those in surrounding areas.

“We want mums with children of all ages to know that there is a safe space where they can find support among others who truly understand and know that they are not alone.”
