THE NHS has issued advice on staying safe this winter with outbreaks of flu and norovirus.
Health officials at North Cumbria Integrated Care (NCIC) have urged the public to take precautions to avoid catching these types of illnesses.
Dr Catherine Monaghan, medical director for North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board, said: “At this time of year we often see people come unwell with viruses like flu or norovirus, the winter vomiting bug.
“Most of the time you recover without needing to see a doctor or visit the hospital.
“If you’re not feeling well try staying home as much as possible to avoid spreading germs. Looking after yourself is important.
“Look after yourself by staying hydrated and taking paracetamol for any aches or fever.
“If your symptoms last for more than three days or you have existing health conditions contact your GP or NHS 111 for more advice.
“Flu and norovirus spread quickly, especially in hospitals where patients are more vulnerable.
“So please don’t visit loved ones in hospital if you feel unwell. And the good news, everyone can help stop the spread.
“Make sure you get your flu and RSV vaccinations if you are eligible. Don’t forget to wash your hands often, use tissues when you cough or sneeze, and bin them straight away.
“Together we can all do our bit to stop the spread and keep everyone safe this winter.”
