North Cumbria roads disrupted by heavy snow during Amber weather warning

DISRUPTION has been felt around Cumbria into Mon as snow and ice caused issues throughout the county.

An amber weather warning for snow was placed on Cumbria from the evening of Saturday, January 4 and remained in place until lunchtime on Monday.

An amber Cold-Health alert was also placed on the county and the rest of the country from 12pm today, Mon 6 Jan, until 12pm Sunday 12 Jan.

The adverse weather saw a number of roads closed across the county throughout the weekend with the A66 closed in both directions between the A1M (J53) and the M6 (J40) and the a number of Lake District passes such as Newlands Pass, Wrynose Pass and Hardknott pass closed at different points over the weekend.

A collision on Wrynose Pass (Image: Supplied) A collision on the A595 at Bothel closed the road for some time throughout Sunday evening, January 5, the crash was initially reported as involving 10 vehicles, but Cumbria police confirmed that only two vehicles were involved and other drivers had stopped to assist.

Police have said that the were very poor and slippery road conditions at the time, although it appears there was minor damage only with no injuries.

On Sunday evening, Allerdale police said that officers across the area were ‘dealing with multiple weather related incidents and road traffic collisions’.

Wasdale MRT were called out to walkers (Image: Wasdale MRT) Bus services in West Cumbria were also affected by the weather, with Stagecoach announcing on Sunday evening that they had suspended all of their services, saying: “Due to severe conditions, all services have been cancelled. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Bus services were also affected into Monday with Stagecoach Cumbria warning bus users to ‘be aware that you might experience some disruptions’.

Fellview Primary School in Caldbeck announced they would be closed on January,7 with any further closures to be announced by the council as and when decided.

In a statement, Cumberland council said: “A huge thanks to all our staff who have been working tirelessly over the weekend and overnight – braving the elements – to help keep our roads clear and delivering a variety of services, including care, to some of our most vulnerable residents.”
