Phil Foden’s ‘tired’ admission confirms Liverpool’s Premier League title suspicions

Phil Foden has admitted Manchester City’s players are “tired”, which will no doubt be music to the ears of Liverpool amid this season’s title race.

City missed the chance to make up some ground on the Reds on Tuesday night. Having led 2-0 at Brentford thanks to Foden’s double, Pep Guardiola’s side ultimately threw away two points as the hosts struck late to claim a point.

With Liverpool unable to find a winner at Nottingham Forest, it means City remains 12 points behind the Premier League leaders, with the Reds still holding a game in hand as well. Even with City’s usual standards during the second half of a campaign, it does look like they will have too much ground to make up this season.

Their form has picked up recently after they went on a remarkable stretch of one in 13 games across all competitions, although Foden did make a telling admission after the draw at Brentford that may well confirm their status in the title race.

“We just looked tired at the end, the last 20, 30 minutes,” Foden told TNT Sports. “We looked leggy and they put the pressure on and put longer balls into the box. We didn’t cope with the physicality at the end. It’s one of the toughest places to come and they give you different challenges.

“I was happy with the performance up until we went 1-0 up and then after that we let our performance slip and gave the ball away. It’s something to learn from. They gave us a challenge today and we did the best we could.”

Foden added: “We’re used to it for many years, we’ve been playing the majority of the competitions and playing every three days so it’s something the squad are quite used to, no excuses.”

Despite the large gap separating them from Liverpool, Foden seemed to suggest City aren’t giving up on their title hopes just yet.

“It’s definitely picked up from previously and performances are a lot better than they were. We’ve still got steps to go to where we want to be but as long as we keep making them small steps and improving, that’s what we’re aiming to do.”

Liverpool.com says: There is always that nagging doubt with City considering the sort of runs they’re capable of going on, but surely a 12-point gap is too much for them to make up? They do look like they will make signings this month, which may well help them improve for the remainder of the season, but based on the current evidence, Liverpool shouldn’t have to worry about them this season.
