Plans for new urgent treatment centre at Cumberland Infirmary approved

PLANS for a new urgent treatment centre at Cumberland Infirmary have been approved by planners at Cumberland Council.

The decision to grant planning permission to North Cumbria Acute Hospital NHS Trust for the site at Newtown Road was made on Friday (January 10).

As well as the centre the application was for the realignment of an internal access road and the alteration to car parking facilities.

Outline planning permission was first granted last year and the latest decision was the next step in the planning process after more detailed plans were submitted.

According to a historic statement the hospital sits to the west of the city and has been the subject of significant redevelopment in recent years with a new hospital and cancer centre delivered on the site.

It states: “The proposed development is sited to the east of the Doctor’s Residence (which was formally referred to as Crozier Lodge).

“The Doctor’s Residence was the first health facility on the site, built as a reaction to the epidemics which plagued the 19th Century including smallpox, thymus and enteric fever.

“As a response to the number of ill, the building was erected in the 1820s as a House of Recovery and thereafter a fever hospital. This is a Grade II listed structure.”

According to the report the application proposed the provision of the new Urgent Treatment Centre which would be in compliance with national standards and improve the quality of care which can be offered from the Cumberland Infirmary.

The report states: “In terms of appearance, the unit will be single storey with plant located on the top of the building. The scheme will provide 12 consultation rooms, waiting areas for children and adults and appropriate rest and storage areas.

“It is considered that the development as proposed represents the best solution for patient needs, delivery of services and impacts on the listed building and existing hospital.”
