Popular 1970s baby name drops out of top 100 list for boys

Everyone knows that, like most things, baby names come in and out of fashion.

Yet while there are some that have managed to stay in the baby name charts for decades, there’s one that’s dramatically fallen out of favour.

Among the top boys names of the 1970s, Jason has now slipped out of the top 100 after years of being a mainstay.

It’s one of the names to take a tumble in the Babycentre’s list of top baby names for 2024.

The name first became popular in the United States where between 1973 and 1982, it was in the top five most popular names for boys. And it remained in the top 50 most popular names until 2005.

Throughout the 1970s it was among the top 20 male names in the UK.

But it’s not the only name falling out of favour. In what Babycentre describes as ‘a surprising turn of events’, both Nova and Lilly have both crashed out of the top 100. Nova, ‘once a rising star’, has fallen out of the charts after securing the 94th spot in 2023.

Meanwhile, though we’ve seen Lily on the rise, the alternative double L spelling Lilly, a staple in the charts, has seen a significant drop, falling out of the top 100 entirely after hovering in the mid-90s last year.

Other names falling down the list include Amelie, which went down 12 places in the chart to number 94 and Lucy, down 11 positions to 95.

In the boys chart Jaxon fell 14 places to 64, and Austin crashed down 13 places to number 91.

There’s been no change to the number one spots this year, with Olivia and Muhammad holding on to the top position in the girls and boys charts respectively.

The boys top 10 has remained the same as 2023, with the first difference in the chart happening at number 15, with Archie up two places to claim the spot.

Stability at the top has also been a trend for the girls list, as the names featured in the girls top 10 remained the same this year too, but unlike the boys there’s been some ups and downs. Lily sneaked up to take third and Isla slipped down to take fourth this year.

Grace has climbed closer to the coveted top five, up three places to number six. Sophia is up one position to take seventh and Freya and Ivy are down two spots to numbers eight and nine. Ava has held on to fifth, while Willow remains strong at number 10.
