Police have warned drivers to ‘drive to the weather conditions’ after freezing temperatures overnight caused icy conditions on Thursday morning.
Carlisle faced temperatures of around minus eight degrees on Wednesday evening with more rural areas of Lake District seeing temperatures drop to as low as minus 15 degrees in the coldest night of the year so far.
The chilly temperatures are set to continue towards the weekend before conditions become milder as next week begins.
A595 both ways impassable due to snow from Hallthwaites to Holmrook, Honister Pass is closed both ways due to ice, Hardknott Pass is closed both ways between Wrynose Pass and the Brook House Inn and Newlands Pass is closed both ways between Braithwaite and Buttermere.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Police said: “Please be aware ice may be affecting our county’s roads and ensure you drive to the road and weather conditions.”
The police then issued the following advice for drivers.

Allow yourself extra time to defrost your car in the morning and remember to stay with your vehicle while your windscreen defrosts.

Leave extra time for travel – and always drive according to the conditions and any advice given out on road signs
