WARRINGTON has woken up to flooding this New Year’s Day.
A number of roads across the town are impassable, such as Stockton Lane in Grappenhall, with brook and river levels particularly high.
It comes after a number of flood warnings and alerts have been issued for the town as heavy rain battered Warrington yesterday, Tuesday.
The Environment Agency says flooding is expected and areas at risk are those closest to Sankey Brook, including Chepstow Close, Colwyn Close, properties on and around Higham Avenue, Tavlin Avenue, Hodgkinson Avenue, Marshall Avenue, Hawleys Lane and Mullen Close.
According to the agency, as of 9.15am, The Sankey Brook level at Higham Avenue was 3.32 metres. Property flooding is possible when it goes above 3.10 metres.
Flood warnings have also been issued for Sankey Brook at Gemini.
Areas at risk include commercial and retail property off Europa Boulevard at Gemini Industrial Park. Additional properties at risk include parts of Fairbourne Close, say the Environment Agency.
Last night, a flood alert was also issued for locations near River Sankey.
The alert read: “Rising river levels overnight may lead to flooding.
“Flooding is possible from 4pm on December 31.
“Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the River Sankey, particularly around low lying land and roads around Black, Barkers, Windle and Whittle Brooks and their tributaries.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and monitoring rainfall and river levels.
“Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses.”
