Sharks Goalie Suffered Fractured Cheek On Flukey Play

Vitek Vanecek is ruled week-to-week after he suffered a fractured cheek from an errant puck on Dec. 17.

“It’s frustrating. You feel for him and what happened, and just how flukey it was, but it happened,” Warsofsky said. “That’s the card we were dealt, and we know [Vitek] is going to work extremely hard to get back and help our hockey team.”

Vanecek was the backup goalie against the Winnipeg Jets on Dec. 17, and a puck was deflected off a stick. The puck flew into the bench and hit the goalie in the head.

Forward Klim Kostin was activated from injured reserve on Friday, and Vanecek was moved to IR in a similar move. Kostin will return to the Sharks lineup against the Calgary Flames tonight.
