Tattoo artist shares four reasons you might be turned away for new inking

Getting a tattoo can stressful for anyone. Because of this, artists usually like to give their clients as much information as possible before the appointments so they know what to expect, including what you shouldn’t do.

A Brighton-based tattoo artist named Tamsin went online to share her main reasons why she would cancel a client’s tattoo appointment at the last minute.

The first thing she said would cause her to cancel a client’s appointment would be if the client shows up with a sunburn on the skin area where they want the tattoo to be.

“I can’t tattoo over it, won’t tattoo over it. I will send you home, you will lose your deposit because I make it very clear that you can’t come in that way,” she said before explaining the skin would be too sore to ink, meaning it’d be even more painful for the client.

She also said the tattoo won’t heal as well as it should. The sunburn also make it harder for the tattoo artist in question to do their job as the skin is too red to properly see the stencil and where to do the lines and the shading, she explained to her TikTok followers.

“It’s an absolute no no,” she said before moving on to her second reason why she might refuse a client’s appointment, which was if the client happened to have active acne or eczema on the area of their where they’d want the design to be.

“I can’t tattoo over it, it won’t heal well, it won’t heal at all. It just won’t be in your skin,” Tamsin explained. “It’s not doable, so if you are not willing to get your tattoo in a different placement, you can’t get a tattoo at all.”

She smoothly segued to the third reason why she would refuse to tattoo someone, which is if the client showed up to their appointment drunk or on any other kind of substance.

“If you are on some kind of substance, you can’t give consent for a tattoo anyways. It opens up a whole can of worms,” she told her viewers.

The last reason she would cancel your appointment for would be if her client was being too indecisive on where the stencil should be, saying: “I mean in the most dramatic way, because I’m very patient when it comes to things like that. I will replace a stencil as many times as you need.

“But if it’s getting to the point where there is no more positions I can possibly do, and I’m questioning whether you even want the tattoo, you’re question whether you even want the tattoo, I’m not gonna do it.”

Tamsin went on to explain the last thing she wants is for the client to regret their tattoo, so she won’t go through with the inking if the client is showing any hesitation to getting it.
