The household item that can stop your car doors freezing shut in cold weather

A DIY expert YouTuber has revealed how he keeps his car doors free of frost throughout the harsh winter months.

Handyman influencer @FixThisHouse uses his YouTube channel to show viewers life hacks to improve their home and keep their car in top condition.

The host, who has hundreds of thousands of subscribers, shows motorists how a toolbox staple can help to prevent car doors from freezing shut when the mercury plunges, reports The Express.

@FixThisHouse sprayed some WD-40 silicone quick-drying spray onto a microfibre cloth and then applied a small amount of the liquid onto the weather shields, which are strips of rubber that run around the doors.

He explained: “It snowed a little bit last night, so let’s see how the doors are. You can see the handles are stuck; the moisture has stuck together on the inside of the door. So, here’s a useful and very helpful tip that I want to show you, and that’s by using WD-40 silicone quick-drying spray.

“Now this spray is waterproof, protects rust and can be applied to multiple surfaces. I want you to use this on the weather stripping on your doors. Just spray a bit on a rag, apply it onto your weather stripping all the way around, and that’s pretty much it.”

The liquid prevents moisture from building up and freezing, meaning the doors will not get stuck during the cold climate, but motorists should be careful not to get any of the WD-40 onto interior plastics,

This trick can also be used to keep door locks from freezing, with drivers advised to apply a small amount into the lock using the thin nozzle that comes with the can.

Later in the video, @FixThisHouse recommended that all drivers carry a rubber floor mat in their car, not only to help keep it clean but in case the vehicle gets stuck.

He adds: “If you ever get stuck in a ditch full of snow or anywhere, even on mud, a great tip to know is if you have floor mats on you, get one and place it underneath where your tyre is.

“The floor mats will help gain traction on top of the mat to help you out of the ditch. Now this is also a good technique, to carry a piece of plywood, so you can wedge it between your tyres, just in case you get stuck, this will act as traction.”
