“The odds are so stacked against us”: Popular Bury restaurant to close this month

A popular fusion café bar will close its doors at the end of this month following a “difficult decision” by its owners.

Crowded House, on Manchester Road in Bury, opened in 2015 when the restaurant was launched by husband and wife Johanne and Dave Banks.

(Image: Martini Archive) The restaurant will close its doors for good on January 31st, as the couple have cited “difficulties” in keeping the venue open since the pandemic.

The couple had previously worked on cruise ships for 13 years.

The three-storey building in Manchester Road has housed not only a bustling restaurant but a hair, nails and make-up salon and photography studio.

Taking to social media, the couple announced the closure of the Crowded House with a full statement:

It reads: “Thank you and farewell.  We have had the best 10 years at Crowded House.

“However, it is with a very heavy heart that the time has arrived to close our wonderful little business.

“We genuinely feel that we have all built a little community of true friends, whom we hope will stay in touch. You, our loyal customers have seen us through thick and thin, so a huge thank you for your ongoing support.

“We have truly tried everything possible to avoid this heartbreaking decision. However, I’m sure you all can understand the difficulty we’ve had in maintaining momentum when the odds are so stacked against us.

“We know you are fully aware of how much has changed in everyone’s lives since COVID19. Due to the pandemic we have all had to cut back drastically, whilst it seems every cost in our life seems to be going up.

“On a huge positive note… We all have to take time out to thank Darren, our head chef, without whom Crowded House would not have existed. We have been friends for over 30 years and hope many more to come!

“We will always be here for you and thank you explicitly!

“A special shout out to Michael, our commis chef, who has been with us since the very beginning. Thanks for your loyalty and we wish you every success in your career going forward.

“Another huge thanks to Sara, our salon manager and head hairdresser. Again, without her the salon wouldn’t be the safe haven for our lovely clients that we know today.

“Just like Darren, Sara has been a lifelong friend. She will be continuing hairdressing, so please support her in her new ventures (we will let you know where asap).

“All our talented singers and performers have been amazing over the years and have truly helped keep the wolves from the door.

“Danny Quin, Sian Stephens, Kay Dyson & lately Rachael Green, we thank you for your service.

“Last but definitely not least… a massive thank you to Dave for helping make this dream a reality in every way.

“Now before I carry on and cry like it’s a blooming BAFTA:

“Our doors will close for the last time on the 31st Jan 2025, both the restaurant and salon. Any bookings/appointments thereafter will be cancelled via our systems.

“We would be overjoyed see you & say a fond farewell over the next few weeks.

“Important note: for those of you who have gift vouchers, please feel free to use them during this time in the salon, restaurant or both.

“Finally, please support your local, or they won’t be around much longer. Other businesses are suffering too and fully need your support. So when you think of going to McDonald’s or Starbucks please think local instead.

“These are some of our figures to give a little insight as to the struggles faced by small business; utilities 55% increase, food costs 38% increase, insurance 327% increase, rent 12% increase, general running costs 27% increase, wages & NI announced by the government for April this year are not sustainable.

“Footfall is at a 41% decline and the maintenance and replacements of key items make it unviable.

“Lastly but very pertinent if anyone has a job for the staff or us, please DM us.

“Cheers Johanne, Dave, Darren, Sara and Team Crowded”
