Thug robbed man as he walked back to his hotel after night out

A violent thug who robbed a man as he walked through Manchester city centre after a night out has been jailed.

Ahmed Elgamodi, 28, attacked the victim, who was visiting the city from Hong Kong, as he returned to his hotel at about 11.20pm on July 12 of last year.

The man, who was in his 30s, had been out enjoying a few drinks when Elgamodi approached him in Back George Street and offered him some cannabis.

Following a brief conversation, Elgamodi threw the man to the floor and assaulted him. He then snatched the victim’s phone from his pocket and ran off.

The victim was left with a minor swelling to his head. Less than two hours later, police arrested Elgamodi as he rode a pedal bike through the city centre. A police officer had identified him after viewing CCTV footage of the incident.

Elgamodi, of no fixed abode, was convicted of robbery at Manchester Crown Court on Tuesday (January 14). He was sentenced to five years and two months in prison for the robbery and ordered to serve a further two years for his involvement in the supply of crack cocaine.

He was also made the subject of a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO), which prevents him from visiting parts of Manchester for eight years.

PC Jamie Acton, from Greater Manchester Police’s Manchester Central Neighbourhood Team, said: “This disgusting attack on a visitor to our city is not something we will ever tolerate, and I am glad that Elgamodi was quickly identified and arrested following the robbery.

“The investigation into this incident was in conjunction with one into drug supply across Manchester, and ensured a seven-year sentencing. I hope Elgamodi takes time to think about his actions while in the four walls of a prison cell.”
